Math
is often a difficult subject for students who have difficulty with
memorizing formulas and using logical thinking. Often, students who
have difficulty with math need to find ways to apply the math concepts to
everyday use. Incorporate math into everyday activities and in
subjects like language arts (time and number systems), science
(measurements and statistics), social studies (time and money), visual
arts (geometry), music (fractions), physical education (measurements and
statistics), life skills (time and money), and performing arts
(measurements and time).
Games are especially important when students need to learn new ways of thinking. Create various card and board games or incorporate existing games into your class. Games like chess and checkers help students to notice patterns. Card games can be used to teach number sets. The secret is to teach the students the game first, let them enjoy it as pure entertainment, and several weeks or months later use it as a tool to teach a math lesson. |
